Die Fachgruppe Freie Forschungsinstitute wurde 1965 von der Gesellschaft für Musikforschung als Arbeitsgemeinschaft und Interessenvertretung der "freien", d.h. von den Universitäten finanziell und inhaltlich unabhängigen Forschungsinstitute eingesetzt. Derzeit gehören ihr 50 Institute mit ca. 140 hauptamtlichen wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeitern an. Etwa die Hälfte von ihnen arbeitet an den Editionen der großen Musiker-Gesamtausgaben (Neue Bach-Ausgabe, Beethoven Werke, Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe usw.) Die andere Hälfte ist in archivalischen, quellenkundlichen oder musealen Bereichen tätig und oft ebenfalls mit Editionen oder Grundlagenforschung befasst.

Die Fachgruppe fördert den wissenschaftlichen Erfahrungsaustausch zwischen den Mitgliedern und die Verbindung zur übrigen Musikwissenschaft. Sie richtet Symposien und Kongresse aus und beteiligt sich mit wissenschaftlichen Veranstaltungen an den Tagungen anderer Organisationen. Sie hat einen Arbeitskreis zur Edition von Musikerbriefen und -Schriften gebildet, der von Dr. Gabriele Buschmeier geleitet wird.

Die Fachgruppe arbeitet mit der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für germanistische Edition und mit der Arbeitsgemeinschaft philosophischer Editionen zusammen. Sie ist Mitglied im Deutschen Musikrat und im deutschen Kulturrat.

Als Berufsorganisation bemüht sich die Fachgruppe, die Arbeitsbedingungen in den Mitgliedsinstituten denen anderer akademischer Forschungseinrichtungen anzugleichen. Ihre ursprüngliche Aufgabe, die langfristige finanzielle Sicherung der Forschungsprojekte, erhält in letzter Zeit wieder besondere Aktualität.
